Ashtead Colts vs AFC Ewell U9 Match, 1-1 written by Tim Lawrence
Given the way they played, AFC Ewell would ordinarily feel hard done by not to win this match, but the style in which they dominated this game meant that football was the winner! A clash in kits, should really have seen AFC swap their jerseys for the Brazilian yellow given the level of total football that was on display!
Ashtead took the lead in the 2nd quarter after some good pressure and a shot on the edge of the box, went through the crowd and George’s legs. AFC equalized late in the 3rd following some great work by Albert down the wing, who beat his man and crossed to Leo who notched a well-deserved goal.

As it happened:
A break from the rain, meant the crowd were dry but the grass was wet which meant it was once again a perfect day for a game of soccer!
Gary warmed the team up offering motivational words of advice on how to channel the kids inner “Fortnite” killer instincts when in front of goal. Flynn nursing a sore ankle passed a late fitness test and Matt was pleased as he didn’t have to tie a boot lace all morning!
A different referee from last time, still offering up knee-high socks but not quite as authentic as his predecessor. To his credit, the referee had a top game and kept it flowing which made for a great game to watch!
1st Quarter:
AFC come out the traps and move the ball forward only for the ref to stop the game after a fierce shot hits an Ashtead defender in the head leaving him in a heap. Well played referee and after a quick douse with the magic sponge, the kid is back on his feet.
Frankie looking lively beats two and gets a good cross in but out for a corner. The cross is swung in, but Frankie’s effort is cleared.
Ashtead move it forward, but Noah reads it well and sweeps up only for Ashtead to put together some quick passes on the edge of the box, but their final shot hits the side netting.
Harrison puts in an excellent tackle, advances forward and earns a free kick in the process. H calls for a quick pass on the free kick, takes a touch and makes the keeper work… unlucky.
AFC work the ball nicely across the team from the back, but the final shot is out for a goal kick! Great play.
Ashtead mount an attack and send a long-range effort towards George which bounces just before him, but his body was behind the ball well and he gets it away.
Ashtead earn a corner and fire in a long-range effort which sails over the bar.
Another great move forward by AFC as Teddy links up with Frankie but his cross doesn’t quite reach AFC at the back stick… unlucky,
Finley stays well with his man and does enough for the Ashtead cross to go wide for a GK.
Albert earns a corner which is crossed in and hits a few bodies and Teddy manages a shot but rebounds for another corner!
The ref blows for the end of the 1st quarter and a lively start from both teams.
Start of the 2nd Quarter
AFC start where they left off and Frankie battling well up the wing to earn a throw. Teddy and Frankie link up well again but out for a GK.
Albert takes a free kick which strikes the wall and Ashtead defend.
AFC think the game’s stopped, but play continues as Ashtead break and George is called in to action and out for a corner. Ashtead’s cross flies through the crowd and they manage a shot which is wide and out for an AFC GK.
George passes to Harrison who plays a great ball over the Ashtead front line (a la Hoddle) to set Frankie on his way but the ref calls a hand ball.
Ashtead shoot from distance which stings George’s gloves, but he pushes it away well and out for a corner.
GOAL 1-0: Ashtead swing the ball in and a low shot from the edge of the box goes through the crowd and in!
Subs: Off Harrison, Frankie, Albert ON Flynn, Lukas, Leo
Teddy gets taken out with a professional foul (do they have yellow cards at this level?!)….. Flynn has a go from distance but a great save from the keeper.
Flynn tracks back well to win the ball, beats one and earns a throw.
Lukas chasing back as the last defender puts in a great tackle and out for a GK. George gives it back to Lukas with total football, AFC work the ball to Teddy who drops his shoulder to beat the defender, but his shot is wide… great move!
George meets the advancing striker in the box, tackles and keeps going to the next and clears the ball to safety!
A great pass to Noah who gets his shot away, but the keeper pulls out another fantastic save to this time to the bottom right!
Ashtead launch the ball forward, but Finley reads it well, stays on his feet and clears it to safety.
Lukas is then called in to action and defends well but is brought down and earns a free kick.
The ref blows for the end of the half as Finley puts in a reducer whilst shutting down a threatening break!
0-1 Start of the 3rd Quarter
Lukas earns a free kick and AFC’s long-range shot is easy for the rotated Ashtead keeper.
Leo trying to create space to make a shot, but Ashtead manage to defend.
Teddy sprints back well and Ashtead’s control is bad and out for an AFC throw.
George comes off his line to collect the ball and relieves some pressure from Ashtead.
Flynn dinks the ball over the midfield and Leo controls it well on his chest, but his spin and shot is out for a GK.
Flynn tackles well and has a long-range effort that goes out for a GK.
Flynn drags the ball back and sets Teddy on his way who wins a throw.
Ashtead launch the ball forward, but Finley reads it like a book and gets it away. Finley is called in to action almost straight away but tackles well and clears.

SUB Off Leo / On Teddy
Frankie down the wing again gets his shot away but the keeper saves. Another great move forward and Albert shoots wide.
Ashtead shoot from distance but George manages to deal with the nasty bounce just in front and kicks to safety.
Albert tackles well and wins a throw which breaks down a dangerous Ashtead move.
Teddy playing like a man possessed chases down the ball again, but Ashtead defend.
Lukas puts in a thumping but fair tackle which leaves the Ashtead player licking his wounds and the ref blows the whistle for the end of the game.
A fantastic game to watch with some incredible “total” football being played by AFC! We were unlucky not to win, but thoroughly enjoyed watching that one! Well done lads!
