AFC Ewell vs Roundshaw Colts U9 Match, 2-1 written by Tim Lawrence
AFC’s class shines through as they win 2-1 in what was always going to be a physical battle. AFC took the lead in the first quarter with a class free kick from Flynn who dinked it over the wall. Roundshaw stepped up in the 2nd quarter and their persistence paid off with a decent strike after AFC failed to clear the 2nd ball. AFC then started to play the more attractive football despite the Roundshaw’s physical game which AFC matched and left a few of their players searching for the magic sponge. AFC’s winner came in the final quarter as Albert hit a fine strike low and in the bottom corner.
Starting Line Up:
Leo, Finn, Flynn
Albert, Lukas, Noah
George in the sticks
Subs: Frankie, Harrison & Teddy
As it happened:
Probably the worst conditions ever to be seen with high winds and rain and with both sets of fans cowering in the trees for protection, meant that is was once again a perfect day for a game of soccer! Geoff pleased that his scout’s education paid off as he proved skin is indeed waterproof by wearing shorts… but surely must’ve been cold?!!
1st Quarter:
Leo skips through and it brought down before he can shoot and wins a free kick on the edge of the box. Flynn shoots but hits the wall and the keeper gathers and kicks long!
Noah reads the long ball and clears the ball to safety.
Roundshaw take a pop shot from distance but it sails over the bar giving George no problem.
A blatant foul from the Roundshaw defender who’s looking at the AFC striker and barges into him. Unbelievably the Roundshaw manager is contesting it but clearly even VAR would agree with the ref who awards a free kick on the edge of the box.
GOAL: 1-0 – What a free kick from Flynn who dinks the ball over the wall and over the flapping keeper!
2nd Quarter: Kicks off 1-0 to AFC
AFC mount the first attack with a shot from Albert across the goal but wide.. Unlucky!
Subs: ON Frankie, Teddy / Off Finn, Leo
Roundshaw win a free kick in a dangerous area outside the box but their shot sees George lighting up a cigar as it sails high and wide… All day!
Another attack from Roundshaw who are searching for an equalizer and work the ball forward down the wing. They engineer a good strike on goal, but George blocks and away to safety.
Roundshaw threatening, work a shot low and to the left, which George manages to get his boot to and away…Great save!
GOAL: 1-1 Roundshaw’s persistence pays off as AFC fail to clear the second ball and a decent shot! Game on!
A long shot from distance but George is up to the challenge and collects the ball well.
Flynn with an excellent ball out wide which earns AFC a corner. The ball is swung in and Harrison prowling on the edge of the box, connects well but just wide!
Lukas collects the ball deep within his own half and carries it forward, but the move breaks down and the keeper collects.
The ref blows for the end of the half and Roundshaw certainly came out on top in that 2nd quarter, but 1-1 at half-time.
3rd Quarter: Kicks off 1-1 and Finn on for Frankie
Great battling from Finn and Teddy and Finn takes a shot but off the defender and out for a corner but the reds defend.
Teddy makes himself available for a throw which Noah eventually crosses but Finn’s shot is wide, unlucky.
Sub: Leo on for Teddy
Lukas offers up a reducer to the big lad who stays down which the ref amazingly awards Roundshaw a free kick! AFC are able to defend the free kick and get it away!
A confusing drop ball situation, resulted in Flynn booting the ball forward with Leo not sure whether to attack or not, but the Roundshaw defender panics anyway and we win a throw ?
Finn gets caught on the ball and takes their player out who stays down, but the magic sponge sees him OK.
The ref blows the end of the quarter which ends 1-1….. a quarter mainly made up of throw ins due to the high wind!
4th Quarter: Kicks off 1-1 – Subs – Harrison, Frankie & Teddy off for Leo and Albert & Finn
GOAL: 2-1 Flynn takes a shot, but it hits a defender and Leo tries to shoot but deflects out towards Albert who drills it with precision in to the bottom right! Great finish!
Matt is immediately called in to action to tie up a shoe-lace!
Roundshaw have a corner which Frankie intercept and sends it up the wing, well played!
Frankie chases down the spare ball and crosses it in and wins a corner which Flynn’s effort is defended well!
Great link up play between Flynn and Leo who gets brought down on the edge of the box. Flynn’s effort his the wall and he hits the follow up on the half volley but out for an AFC throw.
Roundshaw mount a dangerous looking attack but Flynn slides in with an awesome sliding tackle and out for a throw.
Roundshaw earn a free kick on the edge of the box, but their free kick rattles the top of the bar and out for a goal kick… Phew!
Frankie sends the home supports in to raptures as they think his strike is in…… but “SHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH” Say the travelling fans as it’s only hit the side netting!
The ref blows the end of the game and it’s 2-1 to AFC……..A great result in horrendous conditions…. Well played AFC….!
