Preview:
Inclement weather conditions provided Ewell with a rare week off last time around, and so this afternoon’s trip to Godstone marked a return to league action following their disappointing county cup exit.
The Match:
12
CHANCE
After a positive start, Ewell create the first major opportunity of the game. Allen’s well timed run sees him penetrate the hosts’ backline, but he is unable to sort out his feet and the chance soon comes to nothing.
22
CHANCE
Chipperton rises to meet Bullock’s corner and plants a firm header towards goal, drawing a good save in the process.
24
NEAR MISS
Ransom’s first meaningful piece of action is to make a sprawling save as a Godstone player directs a dangerous header towards goal.
29
CHANCE
Crawford’s thunderous effort is punched clear and the rebound fails to drop favourably for Ewell.
35
BOOKING
Bullock. Bullock’s fifth caution of the season is the result of a badly timed challenge.
HALF TIME – Godstone 0 - AFC Ewell 0
60
CHANCE
Clancy’s effort from an improbable angle glances off the bar as Ewell threaten once more.
68
CHANCE
Clancy bursts through and, after electing no to cross, he loses his footing and the attempt fizzles out.
74
GOAL
A soft set-piece presents the home side with an opportunity that they capitalise upon as a defender rises highest at the back post to send them into the lead.
82
NEAR MISS
Ransom produces a fine fingertip save to keep Ewell in the contest, as spaces begin to emerge in their pursuit of an equaliser.
88
CHANCE
An offside Crawford is given the benefit of the doubt but his left footed effort is sent wide of the post.
FULL TIME – Godstone 1 - AFC Ewell 0
The verdict:
Whilst Ewell were unsurprisingly disappointed with the result, there can be no doubts about their efforts and endeavour on the day. They created a good number of promising attacking opportunities and restricted their opposition to a mere handful of openings. In spite of this, they left Godstone empty handed and scratching their heads as to how this was the case.
