Preview:
Ewell’s excellent start to the season continued last time out as they overturned a strong TFT South West Side. The long trip to Dulwich awaited this week, as Ewell aimed to make it four from four on the road.
The Match:
3
GOAL
Hitch. Assist: Clancy. The home side take their role as hosts too far a gift Ewell the simplest of openers. The keeper inexplicably attempts to dribble past Clancy instead of clearing, is subsequently robbed and Hitch is tasked with slotting the ball home into an unguarded goal.
10
GOAL
Ahmad. More nimble footwork invites a clumsy tackle in the box and Ahmad duly converts to double Ewell’s lead.
14
GOAL
Clancy. Assist: Hitch. Ewell seem to have the game wrapped up inside the opening 15 minutes. Hitch steers a back post header back across goal, where it is guided into the net by the grateful Clancy.
28
CHANCE
Clancy conspires to miss a glorious opportunity after smashing the ball against the post after the keeper palmed a free kick into his path.
35
GOAL
Ewell’s early dominance results in some sloppiness creeping into their game. The home side claw their way back into a game that ought to be dead and buried with a pile-driver following a sloppy Ewell throw in.
HALF TIME – Soutwark Borough 1 - AFC Ewell 3
55
NEAR MISS
Ewell are dealt a warning shot when Ransom’s fine save falls kindly at the feet of an onrushing attacker. Fortunately for Ewell, the resulting goal is rightly adjudged to have been offside.
70
CHANCE
Keogh balloons over from a couple of yards out as Ewell continue to spurn promising opportunities.
72
BOOKING
Keogh’s petulant kick out at the goalkeeper earns him a caution.
78
BOOKING
Bullock earns an unwanted hat trick of cards in consecutive weeks following a cynical foul.
85
GOAL
Another speculative long range effort catches Ewell unawares and sets up an unlikely grandstand finish, given how the game began.
FULL TIME – Southwark Borough 2009 2 - AFC Ewell 3
The verdict:
Ewell’s journey towards claiming the 3 points was certainly an unusual one, given their early dominance and their hosts’ abundant frailties. However, their ability to get themselves over the line came to the fore once again and a dogged second half showing was enough to preserve their lead.
