Saturday First Team v Destiny Academy

Will Chipperton18 Oct 2014 - 14:00

Match report

Preview:
During Ewell’s all-conquering first season, they were unable to get the better of today’s hosts, Destiny Academy, in the 3 occasions in which they met. They were hoping it would be fourth time lucky; Ewell required a win to bounce back following two frustrating results.

The Match:

08

CHANCE

Harley is   played in down the right but his shot drifts wide after beating the keeper to   the ball.

20

BOOKING

Williams’   first foul in the game results in a card – chopping down a pacey attacker 40   yards from goal.

24

GOAL

Own goal –   Assist: Williams. Huge controversy surrounds Ewell’s opener. Firstly,   Williams claimed to have bundled home Bullock’s corner after the ball struck   his arm and then a Destiny shoulder. However, the ball hit the post and was   subsequently cleared, with the goal not given. This led to the real surprise:   an honest linesman who indicated the ball had crossed the line and the goal   was given.

36

CHANCE

Harley   dances through a couple of challenges and fires off a cross/shot that   narrowly evades a telling touch.

HALF TIME – Destiny Academy 0 – AFC Ewell 1

48

GOAL

A nonchalant   free-kick straight after the restart drifts into the top corner, leaving Ransom   with no chance. Not the ideal start to the second half and difficult to swallow   as Destiny level with their first real shot on target.

62

CHANCE

Sear heads   over from close range after finding some room at the back post.

72

GOAL

Chipperton –   Assist: Stevens. Ewell retake the lead as Chipperton’s free-kick, intended as   a cross, ends up beating the Destiny keeper and sailing in.

FULL TIME - Destiny Academy 1 – AFC Ewell 2

The verdict:
Ewell defended manfully despite being much depleted in central defence, with the usual deputies unavailable. Destiny’s chances were at a premium and Ewell managed to string together some pleasing football despite the tricky playing surface. In securing a vital victory, Ewell ensure that they remain in the title hunt and can go into next week’s County Cup fixture with renewed confidence.
