Match report

Fresh from their Faro flights, Ewell would have to overcome jet lag and fatigue if they were to ruin Kerria's title parade. The league itself was out of Ewell's reach, yet they were keen to ensure that their final position in the league reflected their work over the course of the season, and so a win was required. Unsurprisingly, the Nescot playing surface was far from carpet like, and so Ewell needed to readjust in preparation for bobbles aplenty.

The first 20 minutes confirmed suspicions that Ewell would struggle after an eventful week in Portugal, as they looked ragged and devoid of ideas. Groves and Kelly did not travel with the tour party and so the home team could count on them to provide some much needed energy in the middle third. Clancy continued in his overseas role but Ewell struggled to utilise him as the game became scrappy and tense. Kerria notched the game's first goal with a simply worked move that summed up Ewell's half, as it was both sloppy and avoidable.

Ewell made a couple of changes at half time after their insipid first half showing, two more sets of fresh legs in the form of Hodge and Crawford. This had the desired effect as Ewell looked like a new team in the early stages of the second period, winning the 50/50s and rattling their opposition. Their best opportunity came with half an hour left to play, as Chipperton's freekick was spilled by the Kerria keeper and landed at the feet of Kingshott. Unfortunately for Ewell, the aging defender was unable to replicate Thursday's goalscoring exploits and he steered a left footed shot wide from the edge of the six yard box.

Ewell continued to push forward in search of an equaliser but their efforts were ultimately in vain. After a season that promised so much, it seems strange that Ewell's reward will be a fourth place finish, nevertheless progress has been made. A year of consolidation will stand them in good stead for another assault on Junior Division Two next season.
