Match report

Whilst Guia FC are not quite as decorated as local rivals Imortal DC, they also play in the fourth tier and so constituted another stern test for the tourists. Ewell's preparations for the game were not ideal, as their warm up was disrupted by a cunning groundsman who tracked their every move when turning on the sprinklers. To make matters worse, several unnamed members of the away team were nursing a series of lingering hangovers and viscious bouts of sunburn, meanwhile Bunde and Keogh came through late fitness tests with foot and finger problems respectively.

Williams opted to patrol the touchline as a revamped 11 took to the field of play, with perhaps the most notable change being the introduction of Ransom, who assumed the role of quarterback for the evening. Ewell struggled in the early stages and had the linesman to thank after Guia had an effort chalked off after 10 minutes, yet Guia took the lead soon after with a speculative shot from distance. They doubled their lead inside the first half an hour and it appeared as if it was going to be a long evening for the visitors.

However, much like in the game against Imortal, Ewell came out on top in the majority of 50/50 encounters, both in the air and on the ground, and seemed to enjoy playing on a more compact pitch. Having responded relatively well to going 2-0 behind, Ewell ignited hopes of a comeback when Kingshott seized upon the keeper's weak punch and slotted home a half volley from 6 yards out, after Bullock's set piece delivery had initially prompted panic in the Guia penalty area. This was to be the former's last contribution for a while though as he limped off minutes later, yet his replacement, Williams, quickly made his mark by slamming the ball into the referee's stomach. Brimming with confidence after the goal, Ewell began to dictate proceedings and frustrate the home team, so much so that an equaliser was in store. Therefore, it came as little surprise that they did grab a goal before half time, even if it came from the most unlikely of sources. No. Not Williams. Webster. Ewell's no nonsense full back notched his first ever goal in competitive football (6 seasons) after seizing upon a loose ball and nonchantly slotting the ball beyond the onrushing goalkeeper. Whilst it remains a mystery as to what he was doing in the position that he found himself in, he kept his cool when everyone else in the Algarve put their houses on him launching the ball out of the ground. The tables had turned and Ewell genuinely sensed that the game was there for the taking at 2-2, a message that was echoed during the half time break.

Clancy continued to excel in the lone frontman role, even if he did lack the finishing touch when he burst through in the early stages of the second period. Elsewhere, Ransom's midfield masterclass included an array of measured passes and Ewell continued to harrass the home team, who were clearly unused to notion of being tackled. Bunde, who had injured himself in the process of making a brave interception, was rarely troubled during the second half and was comfortable when called into action. Unfortunately, Ewell suffered a cruel blow in the 70th minute as, somewhat ironically, the hosts regained the lead from a corner. The combination of a lucky break and a slight deflection did for Ewell's tiring defence,  yet they rallied again and pushed on in search of another equaliser. Their fighting spirit did not subside and they had an opportunity to claim a dramatic last minute leveller when Chipperton dispossessed a Guia player on the half way line and spotted that the keeper was off his line, though his effort lacked the necessary purchase and fell short of the mark.

Despite the result, the players performed at an incredible level and demonstrated that they are capable of competing against teams of this standard. With a full squad at their disposal and a few more hours sleep, Ewell might have been able to pick up the victory. However, the game ounded off what proved to be a fantastic few days in the sun which will live long in the memories of the 12 tourists.
