Saturday First Team v Imortal DC - Portugal

Will Chipperton15 Apr 2014 - 19:45

Match report

Having spent their first day in Portugal acclimatising to their new surroundings and immersing themselves in the culture, Ewell's tourists faced the small challenge of pitting their wits against a side playing in the fourth tier of the Portuguese football pyramid. Whilst Ewell currently ply their trade in the 15th tier of the English football league system, they went into the game with a sense of freedom, knowing that nobody expected them to get a result. After emerging from the tunnel to the rousing Champions League theme and completing the pre-match rituals, the eagerly awaited contest was finally underway.

Ewell had to work extremely hard to get on the ball, as their impressive opposition rarely gave the midfield five of Bullock, Keogh, Chipperton, Stevens & Sear a sniff of it. Their patient build up play was pleasing on the eye but lacked purpose, and Ewell were able to put out a series of early excursions before succumbing to the opening goal of the game. However, Ransom continued to bark out the orders and the stout backline of Webster, Kingshott, Williams & Cooper heeded these instructions, as Ewell's defensive shape frustrated Imortal for the remainder of the first half.

Meanwhile, Ewell were not content to merely park the bus and created a series of chances of their own. Clancy was a particular nuisance for the home team and his pace, coupled with his direct approach, threatened on a number of occasions, even if he cut an isolated figure at times. Ewell were also enjoying a great deal of success in their aerial duals, especially when flicking on Ransom's kicks for the ever willing Clancy to chase. Fittingly, an episode much like the one above provided Ewell with an opportunity to draw level when the visiting team were awarded a penalty, after Clancy was tripped in the area after another incisive run. Pre-tour speculation had suggested that Williams or Webster would be charged with spot kick duties, but common sense prevailed and Chipperton slotted the penalty home to level the scores. Ewell continued to threaten as both Sear and Clancy had chances to nudge them into a surprise lead, whilst more resolute defending ensured that they reached the interval with the scoreline at 1-1.

Ewell's heroic first half efforts had taken a lot out of them and their resistance could not last forever. Bunde injected a much needed dose of energy and enthusiasm as Ewell battled on for the final 45 minutes. Ransom made a series of instinctive saves and Cooper's spectacular goal line clearance underlined Ewell's determined approach and won over the crowd, but Imortal's reinforcements ultimately took the game away from them. Ewell refused to give up without a fight and mustered a couple of promising opportunities that fell to Clancy, who saw one effort saved and the other rattle the woodwork, but they were unable to add to their tally.

Despite the final score, Ewell's performance contained a number of positives and they raised their game considerably against a technically superior outfit.
