Match report

AFC Ewell made the relatively short trip to Chessington for their final away fixture of the season, looking to keep their title push alive against a team with promotion aspirations of their own. The reverse fixture produced an entertaining affair with Ewell triumphing 3-1 on the day, and so a closely contested match was undoubtedly in store. The significance of the game was apparent from the first whistle, as both teams struggled to get out of the blocks in what was a scrappy first 15 minutes. Ewell's slow start proved to be their undoing, as a Chessington attacker seized upon an underhit pass and jinxed his way through the Ewell backline before sliding the ball into the net. This prompted the right reaction from the away team and they turned the game around in the space of 10 minutes, having previously been unlucky in their attacking endeavours; as threatening crosses evaded the final touch on a couple of occasions. After digging deep, the first of these goals came from a Chipperton free kick and, whilst the effort was tame in comparison to his earlier effort that was only kept out by a smart save, the keeper fumbled this attempt and Hodge was rewarded for taking the gamble as the rebound fell at his feet and he bundled it over into the goal. A driving Kelly run then won the corner that enabled Ewell to take the lead, as Chipperton guided Bullock's devilish delivery beyond the KC keeper. A reinvigorated Ewell proceeded to fashion a handful of promising openings but were unable to extend their lead, which came back to haunt them as a KC player wriggled free on the edge of the box and unleashed a fierce strike than left Ransom with little chance. After a mixed first 45, Ewell could take some positives from their performance and were keen to ensure that they started the second half in the manner that they finished the first. The plan came to fruition before the hour mark, as Chipperton pulled the ball back to Kelly who had taken up a position on the edge of the box and the latter produced an unconventional yet effective 'big toe' finish that nestled high into the back of the net. Ewell's confidence reached a new high when Clancy extended their lead with a tidy finish after linking neatly with Kelly and bursting through the KC backline to devastating effect. At 4-2, Ewell's position seemed secure, yet they were fully aware that the remaining 20 minutes would be a struggle. Unfortunately for them, they did precisely what they did not want to do: give the home side a way back into the game. Clawing back a goal gave the home team the lift they were looking for and they pushed numbers forward in preparation for an all out assault for the last 5 minutes. Ewell continued to defend stoutly, yet were left staring in disbelief when a seemingly harmless corner drifted all the way through the crowded box and found its way into the goal at the back post. This left them feeling shell shocked and they trudged off at full time scratching their heads. Whilst it was not a defeat, they felt hard done by and were left to ponder just how significant the 2 dropped points will be come the end of the season. However, team morale remained tight and will only improve as the side jet off to Portugal for their warm weather camp in the coming week, during which they will test themselves against some esteemed opponents from the continent.
