Match report

Not for the first time this season, a cloud of uncertainty loomed over AFC Ewell's preparations going into a key league fixture. Despite starting the week with an embarrassment of riches in terms of numbers, the match day squad had started to dwindle by Friday afternoon. However, Kelly manfully stepped up and heeded a late call up, having initially scheduled to spend the day working, making up for his infamous no show in what has been dubbed 'Movegate'.After a less than inspiring start to the game, the first opening fell to Keogh, but his finish lacked conviction and the ball crept narrowly beyond the far post. Elsewhere, Sear's header was hacked off the line and Kingshott failed to shovel the rebound home, meaning that the sides remained locked in a stalemate. Chances were at a premium in the first half as Ewell were unable to retain possession of the ball or use it effectively when they did have it. The only other moment of note in the first period came when Williams and Chipperton reenacted the Bowyer/Dyer coming together, though the former's push had about as much power as one of his clearances. Both players would go on to make more constructive contributions later in the game. The first of these marked the turning point in the game and came when Kelly was initially chopped down 25 yards out from goal. Bullock and Chipperton presided over the resulting free kick, and the former's dummy opened up a space for the latter to curl the ball into the bottom corner of the net, to give Ewell a slender lead. Soon afterwards, a bursting Clancy run looked as if it would yield a second and decisive goal, yet his effort from a narrow angle was repelled by the Wilf Kroucher keeper. Would Ewell be made to rue this mistake? It looked as if the answer to this question was a resounding yes, as Wilf created a golden opportunity to steal an equaliser. Ransom did well to get in the way of an effort from close range but, in the ensuing melee, Williams somehow managed to guide the ball away and ensured Ewell survived the late scare. The result crowned an impressive run in March for the away team, as they notched a third successive victory and banked another clean sheet in the process.
