Match report

AFC Ewell headed into this fixture with a strong 14 man squad and high hopes of cementing their promotion push, though they had to get past a Battersea Ironsides side who made life difficult for Ewell in their tie earlier in the season. The sun blazed in the sky and the Nescot playing surface looked to be in fine condition as kick off beckoned. Ewell started positively and quickly clicked into gear, knocking the ball around with confidence and purpose. Whilst they posed a threat in open play, they looked at their most threatening at set pieces. The ball narrowly evaded a telling touch on several occasions, meanwhile Bullock and Kingshott could have been celebrating had their respective contacts been firmer. However, Ewell had Bunde's reactions to thank after he produced an instinctive save to deny what looked to be a goal with the teams deadlocked at 0-0. They managed to take the lead shortly after, when Bullock resurrected a loose ball in the aftermath of another set piece and his cross was diverted into the bottom corner after Sear deftly flicked the ball with the outside of his boot on the half volley.Ewell were good value for their lead at half-time, but it soon vanished after they conceded a sloppy free kick on the edge of the area and the resulting delivery drifted into the top corner. Ewell rallied and restored their lead inside the hour mark, as the persistence of Kelly enabled him to beat his man and square the ball for Bullock to finish. The third goal saw Ewell reap the rewards for their patient approach play, as Cooper picked out Chipperton on the edge of the box and the latter's drilled cross was emphatically met by Kelly at the back post. Bullock doubled his tally with Ewell's fourth, dispatching a shot past the Ironsides keeper at the second time of asking after a surging run and cut back from Groves. Ewell notched the best goal of the afternoon when they added a fifth, once more stemming from a prolonged passing phase which saw Keogh deliver a measured cross for Bullock to steer home, ensuring that he took the match ball (to the changing rooms) in the process. Ewell's football was easy on the eye at times and they forced the Ironsides attackers to live off a measly diet of scraps throughout. Spirits were high after banking another 3 points and Ewell have put themselves in a secure position with only 3 games remaining.
