Match report

A last minute venue change meant that Ewell returned to the footballing paradise that is Prince George's Playing Fields. Ewell's adventures at the ground last season were many and varied, featuring: car break ins; a 12-0 victory; and most memorable of all, Williams A. managing to get his car stuck in the mud. Ewell were hoping that they would not suffer a similar fate on what was, on paper, a winnable game. Kicking off a mere 45 minutes later than scheduled, Ewell were understandably slow to start, yet they could have been out of sight within the first 10 minutes of the game. The host's lack of cohesion meant Ewell got forward at will, but they wasted a series of inviting chances. The guiltiest party in this was Chipperton, as his slip produced the tamest of efforts from the penalty spot, after Kelly had been chopped down by a towering Battersea defender. However, Chipperton spared some of his blushes by rising to nod home Bullock's precise corner a few minutes later, to finally give Ewell the lead after what had been an extremely one-sided opening 15 minutes. Further opportunities to extend their lead arose but a combination of poor decision making and indecision meant Battersea remained in the game. Ewell's creeeping complacency then got the better of them, as a rare foray into their defensive half yielded the equaliser; a simply worked goal that showed Ewell how it is done. This served as a timely wake up call for the visitors and Kingshott plundered his first of the season after seizing on a loose ball in the penalty area, as his swivel and goal bound shot richocheted off a Battersea player before limping apologetically over the line to restore Ewell's lead. The second half was a repeat of the first, as Ewell continued to pass up glorious chances by making the wrong choices on the ball. They did add a third when Keogh beat the keeper at the near post after collecting Cooper's sweeping ball up the line. Ewell made hard work of the rest of the half and set up a nervy final 10 minutes after gifting Battersea a consolation goal. For what was an incredibly one-side game, Ewell did not make the most of the opportunities that they carved out. However, they put last week's cup exit behind them and chalked up another valuable win in their return to league action.
