Match report

After securing their progression to the quarter finals of the Geoff Ellis Shield with a resounding win last weekend, Ewell returned to domestic affairs as they prepared to face Greenside. A spate of injuries and unavailableplayers meant that Ewell handed debuts to no fewer than 3 new faces: Edwards, Westnott and Ibci. Ewell's start to the match perhaps indicated that they missed those who were not at their disposal on the day,as the game lacked quality and Ewell struggled to string together any coherent passing moves. They were upfor the physical battle though, and this meant that they were able to go in with the scores level at half time, despite the underwhelming perfromance. Resolute defending provided the foundations for Ewell's second half search for a winner, as Greenside rarely troubled the away side's backline, meanwhile Ewell were looking increasingly dangerous going forward. Bypassing the sand strewn centre of the pitch enabled them to stretch the Greenside defenders and pull them out of their comfort zones, and one such move almost led to them breaking the deadlock. All the debutants combined effectively down the right hand flank and the resulting pull back was diverted into Keogh's path via Bullock's lay off, and though he came agonisingly close, the former was unable to readjust and provide a finish. As the game approached the 80 minute mark, Ewell tested the Greenside keeper for virtually the first time in the match, as Keogh's instictive turn and shot was smartly tipped around the post for a corner. Incidentally, Ewell's corner count had easily surpassed the double figure mark by that point, and this pressure finally paid dividends in the end. Having loaded the box once more, Chipperton's inswinging corner caught the Greenside keeper unawares and crept in at the back post. Whilst the goal undoubtedly carried an element of fortune, Ewell deserved this lucky break on account of their persistence and hard work in what proved to be a difficult encounter. The combination of the 3 points banked and successive cleansheet accrued ensured that the journey to Wallington was worthwhile, setting Ewell up nicely ahead of their clash with Cheam Village Warriers Reserves next week.
