Ewell showed immense character to come from behind in a dramatic final 5 minutes to win on the final game of 2012 and ensure they enter 2013 as the league leaders. Williams' squad was heavily depleted for the second week running but Ewell demonstrated that their strength in depth is a vital asset as they continue their wonderful form. Ewell were warned that Norbiton Dragons' current league position was deceptive, and their performance supported this as they pushed Ewell all the way. Norbiton started the game full of energy and clearly aimed to disrupt Ewell's momentum and this was assisted by a very lacklustre start from the home side who struggled to string together their passing football on a bobbly surface. Some good defending from the home side ensured that they were not punished for their sloppy start which allowed them to turn their first chance of the game into a goal that put Ewell in front on the 25 minute mark, as Chipperton swung in a ball which avoided 2 Norbiton defenders but was met with an excellent placed finish from Keogh who is returning to the goals after a prolonged drought. Remember the name, his story isn't finished there in this game. While the goal provided Ewell with some much needed positivity, Norbiton continued to apply pressure and were rewarded with an equaliser just before half time as Williams misplaced a pass and allowed Norbiton to break, playing a ball over the top which was accompanied by a deft lob over Bunde that just crept over the line despite the despairing slide of Williams who looked to make up for his error. The goal saw the sides go in to half time at 1-1, but it was early in the second half when Norbiton took a 2-1 lead as Ewell committed many players to an attack only to see Stevens slip on the wet surface allowing Norbiton to break in numbers and slip through a perfect pass that left the Ewell defence exposed. This proved to be a turning point in the game for Ewell however, as fresh faces James Gregory and Harvey McMillan began to create havoc down the wings and Ewell pressed on for an equaliser, rarely letting Norbiton leave their own half. Ewell were once again wasteful in front of goal as Keogh, Gregory and McMillan all missed chances that they won't want to see again. Williams asked for his team to be patient rather than rushing to any drastic formation changes and they were rewarded with an equaliser with 5 minutes to go. Webster and Williams did well to prevent a Norbiton break, and the latter played a ball forward to Gregory who with a perfectly weighted touch set away Groves who poked the ball under the Norbiton keeper. This goal revitalised Ewell and provided them with the impetus to push on for a winner although it seemed they had wasted their opportunity when Chipperton pinged a cross field ball to an unmarked McMillan who trapped the ball perfectly in front of goal, only to lack the desired composure as he blazed his effort over the bar. This was not the end of the script however, as Ewell rewarded their 3 fans who stayed until the final whistle. One final break from the midfield saw Ewell advance in a 4 vs 3 situation with Chipperton on the ball who provided a cool head and managed to pick the right pass amidst the many players and fans telling him to shoot. His ball set away Keogh who had timed his run to perfection before unleashing a low left foot drive across the keeper that went in off the post with seconds remaining. The goal marked a wonderful moment for Keogh as he demonstrated the excellent potential he has a centre forward as he scored his 3rd goal in 2 games and was mobbed by his team mates. The full time whistle soon followed and the result could prove vital at the end of the season. With Rollers Athletic not playing the result takes Ewell 3 points clear. Williams has been quick to warn his players that they will require the same effort in the second half of the season if they are to remain at the top but the team can be very proud of the start they have made in 2012 in their first 3 months as a team. Well done lads.
