AFC Ewell continued their magnificent run to 5 straight wins as they moved to the top of the table after Destiny Academy slipped up away from home. Ewell went out to do their job and that they did, in a game where Ewell rarely got out of 1st gear in terms of quality but were pushed in terms of effort by a battling Cheam side. Ewell failed to get their slick passing moving but took the lead after Clancy won a free kick in a dangerous position on the edge of the box which was dispatched by the impressive Chipperton. This lead was soon doubled after some dubious keeping allowed Hitch another goal for the season. The rest of the half contained little incident as neither side created many chances and Ewell held firm against the barrage of long balls and physical challenges from their opponents to go into half time at 2-0. The manager warned against complacency and the value of the next goal but this was ignored as Cheam pulled a goal back minutes into the 2nd half after a freak deflection left the Ewell backline flat footed. However, while Cheam had their tails up, Ewell ensured chances were kept to a minimum and got their reward with 15 minutes to go as McMillan took his chance well after he was set away by Clancy. The move to the top of the table has been well deserved after some fantastic performances but Ewell know the real work starts now. Everybody wants to beat the league leaders and with the next two league games versus the main title rivals in UKFF and Destiny Academy, Ewell will need to be at their best. However, league priorities will be put aside next weekend as Ewell duel with Destiny Academy once more in the cup.
