Match report

Ewell Record First League WinAfter the disappointment of the opening game, Ewell prepared themselves for a battle versus Tooting Bec 'A' as both sides aimed to record their first points of the season. Ewell were affected by a series of late dropouts which left the team light on the ground, and the difficulty of finding the ground, traffic and girlfriends to be picked all effected the teams pre match preparation as manager Williams wondered if he'd have to field a 6 a side team to start the game. Fortunately, a couple more players arrived before the kick off and Ewell kicked off the game with 10 men. Tooting started the stronger making use of the man advantage, but Ewell were resolute in their defending and saw off the early barrage with Bunde rarely having to make a save. After 10 minutes or so the cavalry arrived and Ewell were able to play with the full compliment of players and consequently grew into the game. Groves, Stevens and Chipperton grafted well in the midfield and aimed to set away Keogh, Bullock, Golder and Hitch on the counter only to be foiled by a linesman with a twitch in his arm which ensured the game was poised at 0-0 at half time. Half time saw Ewell suggest they should look to kick on and dominate the game and began to create some better chances in the second half as Keogh, Bullock, Hitch and Golder all missed one on ones while Kingshott put one over the bar when it was easier to score and Stevens should have hit the back of the net. However, Ewell finally got their breakthrough in the 78th minute as they showed a moment of class in a scrappy game where Ollie Stevens showed great vision to set away Tom Hitch. Despite the best attempts of the linesman to flag Hitch offside wrongly, the referee overruled the decision and realised Hitch bent his run perfectly to go through and calmly finish. Ewell dug in for the last 10 minutes and saw off the late barrage and got a well deserved win.The win was an important one to kick start the season but also one of great character for a new team, and should stand the team in good stead going forward. Up the boys!
